Why is it Easier for Some Songwriters to Create Sad Songs vs. Happy Songs?

Writing songs has been helpful to me in times when I was dealing with grief, depression, disappointment and anger.  I’ve written some of my best songs during the darkest times in my life and “Rise” was one of those songs.  When I set out to write it, it HAD to be written – it was therapy for me.  I lived in a basement apartment at the time (“my underground oasis”) and I could think of nothing but writing and finishing that song.  For me, writing sad or angry songs is so much easier as the emotions are so raw that the lyrics and melody just come easier.  “Rise” is about crawling out of the abyss of self-pity and doing something about it (“rise above it all”).
